How to destroy your reputation by self promotion with special guest, Irina Shamaeva!

Today I am taking a lesson from public figure, Irina Shamaeva’s playbook and hijacking someone’ else blog post to shine light on her online and public behavior in the same fashion … in public.

Irina I’m calling you out this time and today. You have the audacity to insult an informative piece that benefits everyone to make yourself seem all knowing and yet incorrect just the same. You hijack Shally’s post to promote your own blog post nonetheless. This self promotion at another’s expense reminds me of the time you took the microphone (LITERALLY) at sourcecon from Russ Moon during HIS presentation with John Turnberg – to then grandstand with a completely irrelevant mention of chrome when the event was concerning Firefox app – just so you could promote your own business. Everyone gasped but no one called you on it. Esp shameful since Russ was kind enough to assist you when you had issues at your own presentation a few months prior. You also undermined my effort to assist you when you used my interview series to promote your business without my permission when you understand my relationships as they are and you took advantage of a kindness. It was the FIRST time I ever took an interview down which is what makes you distinguished but for no other reason out of 200 interviews I have conducted in “Six Degrees from Dave”. Moreover, I know firsthand You misstated that you never took classes from Shally to upgrade your skills. Everyone learns from everyone else – hence the term community. You have not once acknowledged the benefits of sharing from Shally or other thought leaders and yet your mimic them as your own for your business. This is a public setting and as a Public figure Irina you should be cognizant that such grandstanding will be perceived with the opposite effect. I repeatedly give credit to my sources and to my mentors in every presentation I have made and yet rather than show humility you attack and, furthermore, link to your sites for publicity’s sake than earnest disagreement.

I have seen this behavior from Irina as have many others in the sourcing community and its shameful and it makes me feel sincerely embarrassed for you. It appears to be a genuine self confidence issue.

Use your talents to benefit others and you can start by making a pledge not to pick up microphones to toot your own horn virtually or in-person.

You have talents – use them for positive contributions rather than to assume we are unable to distinguish a debate from an attempt to undermine for self promotion’s sake

NOTE: I vowed never again to spotlight negativity, in the one instance in 4 years of this blog I regretted it and apologized for it. This instance the level of behavior was so audacious and for such a prolonged period of time, I am confident that I will stand by it to my deathbed. This is a public figure whose misbehavior and abuse of the podium virtually and in-person has risen to the level where i can no longer in good faith stand idly by. This is not about my relationship with Shally Steckerl – it is about Irina’s relationship with her public standing, or lack thereof.

Wow. Just wow. This really hits home with me. This is a powerful post. There are a lot of lessons to be learned here. You are a powerful writer. An outstanding professional, and I respect you beyond compare.

It’s people like you that make me grateful I read blogposts.

    P.S. I love Dave Mendoza, who doesn’t?

Dave- Thanks for being willing to “call someone out” for selfish bahavior.. We are ALL guilty to some degree, BUT I TRUST Irina will stop “hijacking” the microphone at events from this point moving forward… 🙂 Best to ALL, Brian-

I’m doing a search for a left-handed brain surgeon in Utah. The candidate must speak fluent Farsi. Can someone please suggest a string I could use on for finding some good resumes before Monday.

If you have any candidates please send them along too.

Ladies and gentlemen, the mic is yours.

I don’t claim to know any of the people referenced in the post-I’m no longer an agency recruiter; my focus is in a relatively narrow realm to support my firm’s needs. However, it’s hard to believe someone who is a member of the diverse and fluid recruiting/sourcing community would behave so boorishly. It’s unlikely she or anyone else is going to reinvent the recruiting wheel. We all start with fundamental rules of engagement and build on them through our experience and interactions. If you can take what you’ve learned and repackage it in an mildly innovative way, great! Just say you’ve learned from everyone you’ve interacted with and leave it at that. Her background as a C++ (a particularly semantic coding language) Developer would surely give her some interesting insights into search engines, but can’t possibly negate the body of information she would have gleaned from others. And to hijack forums for personal advertisement? That’s just tacky and I would assume that repeated behavior of that kind would eventually cost, rather than gain her business. The industry is more complex and collaborative than ever and there is no room for this sort of behavior.
