Price of An Engagement Ring = Unique Viral Marketing

Peter Bretter, a 26 year old television composer took his break up to unique new territory in e-marketing, beginning with an add on the renown DrudgeReport which I visit daily for my daily global news updates.

This is actually very clever marketing for a movie!

In his blog, he elaborates on his efforts which, in effect, if it were real … would obviously damage his personal brand by leaps and bounds as a professional:

“Hope people have been seeing the billboards that I have put up around town. I think its important everyone knows how much Sarah Marshall SUCKS! How she does look fat in those jeans! How my mom never liked her! How over her I am!

So, I used the money that I spent on her engagement ring to buy every available billboard around town. (That’s right Sarah I was going to propose to you. I was just waiting for the right time. I guess that time is never O’clock in the month of Nev-ruary).

Sarah, I really hope you are un-happy for the rest of your life – that you understand how totally over you I am.

That said, you should call me if you want to talk, I can have these things taken down.

I haven’t called because you said you needed space, that’s what you wanted. But when you say to someone you need time you should be more specific. How much time? Cause I am still waiting, but not for you. Just for things to get better…”

What is this vindictive crap doing on a recruiting blog? Aren’t there any professional blogs out there that deal with the nitty-gritty of online recruiting?

We read it, so it’s a great testimonial to the power of the web to affect your reputation. For Sarah’s sake, I hope she’s not looking for a job. Ummm for that matter I hope Peter’s not either…

If it is for a movie it is great marketing. If not…

This is just viral marketing for the movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” – a Judd Apatow (40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad) production soon to be released……

I don’t understand my main stream media marketers think people like to be lied to. Its supposed to be suspension of disbelief, not willful deceit.

Pure genious marketing. Whether or not the movie is a success – and I suspect it will be – the marketing is outstanding.

Buses, cabs, billboards, etc. All with no reference to the fact that it’s a movie have created conversations everywhere. Really smart move.
